GENERAL VOTING
INFORMATION
FOR PRIMARY VOTING IN INDIANA
§
Polls are open from 6 am to 6 pm.
§
Voters are required to present a
State of Indiana
issued photo I.D. to cast a ballot at the polls. However, you may
cast a "provisional ballot" and your vote will be counted if
you provide Election Officials your Identification within 10 days
following the Primary Election.
§
Any registered voter without a state of Indiana photo I.D.
may obtain one, without charge, from any Bureau of Motor Vehicles office
which remains open from 6 am
to 6 pm Primary
day.
§
Voters must declare their political
party affiliation - requesting a
Democratic or Republican ballot since the primary in Indiana is generally a closed
"party" contest, wherein each major political party selects
their nominee to represent them in the November general election.
§
Voters may switch their party preference
however in subsequent primaries. (For example - a voter requesting a
Democrat ballot this year may request a Republican ballot the next
primary or vice versa.)
§
Requesting a party ballot (Democrat or
Republican) voters select from among candidates within their party including
School Board races.
§
Libertarian or Independent candidates are
not chosen in the May primary, but are selected later and appear on the
general election ballot in November along with the Republican and
Democrat nominees.
One Exception
Anyone
wishing to vote only for School Board members
and
not declare a political party may do so by
requesting a non-partisan school board only ballot.
