INDIANAPOLIS – Senate President Pro Tempore David Long has appointed State Senator Jim Arnold (D-LaPorte) to serve on the National Conference of State Legislature’s (NCSL) Standing Committee on Transportation. NCSL’s 12 standing committees are similar in structure to those of committees within state legislatures. Membership consists of state legislators and legislative staff. Standing committees meet three times each year and members benefit from the sharing of experiences in shaping public policy, experimenting with new laws, and managing the legislative institutions. NCSL’s policy positions and lobbying efforts in Washington, D.C., are also guided by the work of these committees. The Standing Committee on Transportation has jurisdiction over issues pertaining to highways and railroads, mass transit, licensing, aviation and waterways, traffic safety, and hazardous materials transportation “I’m honored to be appointed to this national committee,” Arnold said. “It’s important that we ensuring transportation safety not only on our roads, but also at our ports and along the lakeshore.” NCSL is a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the nation’s 50 states, its commonwealths and territories. NCSL provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues. NCSL is also an effective and respected advocate for the interests of state governments before Congress and federal agencies.
