Union Mills, Indiana

Union Mills is an unincorporated town situated in Noble Township in south central La Porte County. The plat of Union Mills was put on record December 7, 1849. The early settlers discovered the fertility of the land and established farms in Noble Township. Descendents of those pioneers are still in the Union Mills area. Some of those families are Bailey, Cummings, Underwood, and O'Hara. The town, at present, has a post office, volunteer fire department, hardware store, an American Legion Post, two resturants, two churches, bank, grain elevator, the Union Mills Branch of the La Porte County Public Library, funeral home and cemetary. The community is served by a public school five miles southwest of Union Mills. South Central School is a K-12 consolidated school in Clinton Township. Although Union Mills is zoned agricultural, it is quickly developing into a "bedroom community". Subdivisions are being created and families are moving in and commuting to work in the large metropolitan areas to the west of LaPorte County.
