Welcome to the Town of Wanatah

The town of Wanatah is ideally located at the intersection of US Highway 30 and US Highway 421. The town is divided into two townships, Cass Township (south of US Highway 30) and Clinton Township (north of US Highway 30). Our population is 1,013 with approximately 450 homes and businesses.

The Town Hall is located at 104 N. Main St. and is open to the public as follows:

Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Town Hall number is (219) 733-2340 and the fax number is 219-733-2943.

Regular garbage pickup is every Monday and Thursday. You are allowed three 33-gallon containers each time. If you have something large or more than three containers, please contact Johnson Dispose-All at 1-800-806-4813. Recycling is every other Wednesday.

Regular Town Council meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM at the Town Hall and are open to the public.

The Town Attorney, Alan Sirinek, Town Attorney, of Friedman & Assoc. of LaPorte, may be reached through his law office at (219) 326-1264.

The Building Commissioner, Lee Campbell, may be reached through the Town Hall at 219-733-2340 or his home at 219-733-2282.

The following is a brief summary of certain town ordinances that are designed to keep our community attractive and comfortable for all of us.  Violation of these ordinances infringes upon the rights of others and renders the offenders liable to fines and other sanctions.

Town Code: Chapter 7, Article II, Section 10

Before proceeding with the erection, construction, enlargement, alteration, moving, removal, demolition, conversion, electrical, plumbing of all buildings or structures in the incorporated area of the Town of Wanatah, a permit shall first be obtained by the owner from the Building Commissioner.

Town Code: Chapter 8, Article I, Section I

Animals are not permitted to run at large without restraint. They are subject to confinement and owners will be fined.

Town Code: Chapter 9, Article III-amended

Weeds or rank vegetation are not permitted to grow in excess of 12" in height. A charge will be assessed if it becomes necessary for the Town to cut and haul away unsightly vegetation.

Ordinance I-72

The keeping of motor vehicles without current license plates, or any junked or abandoned vehicles on private or public property exposed to public view, is prohibited. These vehicles are subject to towing and owners will be fined.

Wanatah Scarecrow Festival

Nearly 15,000 festival goers enjoy this annual Autumn event which features many food vendors, live entertainers, carnival, arts and crafts booths tractor pulls, games, parade and many other events.

 

  Kankakee Valley REMC
For 50 years, Kankakee Valley REMC, a rural electric cooperative, has been an important contributor to the economy of our area.
  Smoker Farm
The farm includes 1400 acres of cropland. The cattle production at Smoker Farm once included both cow/calf and feedlot sectors, however, it has been converted to a strictly feedlot operation.
