Thank you for
your interest in Access LaPorte County (ALCO).
As President
of the Board of Directors of ALCO, let me share with you of
some of the exciting opportunities facing our organization and
our community.
It's been
noted that technology continues to transform our ability to
live, work and communicate within society. Therefore, it should
be our mission, as community leaders, to bring the benefits
of both basic and advanced telecommunications and information
technologies to our community.
It's a mission
that envisions a world in which there is a technology user in
every home, a technology resource center in every community
- where technology no longer divides, but rather, is a bridge
to a better life. And that mission can begin, right here in
Michigan City.
We have
an opportunity now to bring such a Technology Resource Center
to our hometown which could, in turn, be a model for other communities
in our county and the entire region. With ALCO leading the way,
we can combine the previous accomplishments within our community
web presence and public access television to take the next step
of meeting such an ambitious goal. Add an educational element
through involvement from our local university and a leadership
component guided by area government leaders, and this mission
begins to envelop a lifelong learners concept - a desired ingredient
for any community.
However,
we need to remember there are those within our community who
have been lost previously in the so-called "digital divide"
with issues of access for "hard to serve" populations
pushed to the background. We must ensure our mission does not
facilitate further erosion of this type yet empower all individuals
to independently access the services they seek and need through
a uncomplicated, accessible trail. And ALCO remains committed
to inclusion for all our citizens throughout the development
of these programs.
With a keen
understanding of the past constraints along with a distinct
vision for the future, I thank you for the interest in ALCO
and invite you to join us in our efforts as we travel together
on this journey to implement and explore the exciting possibilities
awaiting us all.
